Raise homeschoolers who take responsibility for their learning — without daily battles

TEACH: Creating Independently Responsible Learners is a practical framework designed to help homeschool parents move from constant reminders to confident, independent learners.

When homeschooling starts to feel like constant reminders
instead of real learning...

You didn’t choose homeschooling so you could spend your days nagging, checking boxes, or managing every step of your child’s work.

Yet for many homeschool families, school slowly turns into:

  • Repeating the same instructions day after day

  • Students waiting to be told what to do next

  • Resistance, frustration, or shutdown when it’s time to work

  • Parents carrying the mental load for planning, tracking, and follow-through

Over time, even motivated students can become dependent on reminders — not because they’re lazy or incapable, but because they were never taught how to own their learning.

And parents?

They end up exhausted, wondering if they’re doing something wrong — or if independence will ever really happen.

The issue isn’t your child’s ability.

And it isn’t your commitment as a parent.

The missing piece is a framework that teaches responsibility on purpose, instead of hoping it develops on its own.

TEACH isn’t about
controlling schoolwork —

it’s about teaching ownership

Most homeschool systems focus on what a student needs to complete: assignments, lessons, and checklists.

TEACH focuses on something deeper — how students learn to take responsibility for their learning.

Instead of relying on constant reminders, TEACH gives parents a clear framework for helping students:

  • Understand expectations

  • Set meaningful goals

  • Plan their work

  • Follow through consistently

  • Reflect and adjust when things don’t go as planned

This isn’t about pushing students harder or doing more as a parent.

It’s about intentionally teaching the skills that lead to independence — skills many students are expected to have, but rarely taught.

About the Author

Dennis DiNoia, M.A.Ed., known to families around the world as Mr. D, is an educator, speaker, curriculum creator, and pioneer in student-driven learning. With more than 35 years of experience working with young people, from struggling students in dropout-prevention programs to high-achieving homeschoolers, and every learner in between. He has dedicated his life to helping students develop one of the most essential skills for success: becoming independently responsible learners.

Mr. D began his career as a public school math teacher, where an unexpected experiment with self-grading transformed not only his classroom, but his entire philosophy of education. He discovered that when students check their own work, teach back what they’ve learned, and take ownership of their learning process, their confidence grows, their curiosity ignites, and mastery becomes possible for every student—not just a select few.

Today, Mr. D is the founder of Mr. D Math, a global online learning platform that has empowered tens of thousands of students to succeed in mathematics and beyond. His courses, workshops, and teaching methods emphasize independence, critical thinking, personal responsibility, and mastery through discovery. His approach has transformed families, inspired educators, and helped countless young people gain the confidence to direct their own learning. Visit www.mrdfreeresources.com to discover how Mr. D can help you.

As a professional educator with a Master’s Degree in Education, Dennis has spoken at homeschool conferences across the country, trained parents and teachers, and mentored countless students who credit his methods with helping them thrive academically, personally, and professionally.

Beyond teaching, Mr. D is a lifelong learner, musician, performer, and creator who believes that discovering what you love and doing it with purpose is at the heart of a fulfilling life. His passion for helping young people uncover their strengths and step into their potential continues to drive everything he does.

“Through this book, Mr. D invites parents, teachers, and students into the transformational journey he began decades ago: The move away from teacher-dependent educational models and toward student-led learning. A move that takes learning from an obligation to a source of confidence, ownership, and joy that leads to knowledge. To learn more about his work, book him for a speaking convention, or demo his courses, visit mrdmath.com or connect with him on his socials.

Mr. D was asked for a quote several years ago by a colleague who taught creative writing. He said, “Want new things, think new thoughts.” He still lives by this quote today.”

What Families Are Saying

Dr. Melanie Wilson

Author, Veteran Homeschool Mom

Homeschooling parents who don't want to nag their children or take most of the responsibility for their older kids' learning will love this approach.

The strategies remind me of A Thomas Jefferson Education or a guided unschooling approach. Loads of insight from a gifted teacher who has successfully reached unmotivated students in the classroom.

Highly recommend!

This book sums up Dennis’ personal teaching philosophy that he applies in his math courses. Everything he discusses work together to create his idea of a self taught person. While Dennis’ model of being a self educator isn’t new, I like the fact that he’s pushing for self learning though all aspects of life. I like his conversational style which keeps the book engaging. Overall, this book is a short read that offers a basic model of what a lifelong self taught person is, and why it’s important to be able to teach yourself.
